Why hybrid retailers struggle with loyalty

Most loyalty apps are built for online-only stores. The moment a hybrid retailer plugs Shopify POS into the picture, three things break: customers earn points online but not in-store (or vice versa), staff have no way to identify members at the POS register, and the points balance shown in the online widget does not match what the customer was told at the till. This is the most common operational complaint we see from merchants leaving Smile.io or Yotpo for Anchor.

The fix is structural: the loyalty data model has to live on the Shopify customer record itself, not in a vendor-side database that the POS cannot reach. Anchor stores points balance, tier status, and earn history as Shopify customer metafields. That means the Shopify POS app sees the loyalty data automatically — no separate POS extension, no API call between systems, no reconciliation lag.

    Current points balance, tier (Bronze / Silver / Gold / Platinum), and any tier-specific perks appear automatically. No separate POS extension.

    Apply available rewards at checkout

    If the customer has earned a redemption tier (e.g. 500 points = $30 off), staff can apply it as a discount with one tap.

    Tender the order

    The customer earns points on the post-discount total at the configured earn rate. Tier multipliers apply if you have set them up (Silver 1.5×, Gold 2×, Platinum 3×).

    Receipt + thank-you email

    Customer gets their POS receipt with the new points balance. Anchor optionally sends a thank-you email with a "next-tier delta" nudge.

Channel-specific earn rules (optional)

The default is one earn rate across both channels — that is what most stores want. But Anchor lets you configure channel-specific multipliers when you have a deliberate reason:

  • POS earn boost during launch. 2× points on POS purchases for the first 90 days of program launch — drives in-store traffic from your existing online customer list.
  • Online-exclusive product earn. 1.5× points on a specific online-only collection if you want to push DTC volume on selected SKUs.
  • Cross-channel redemption gating. Cap how many points can be redeemed in a single POS transaction (e.g. max $20 off) to control margin exposure at the till.
