Easiest Shopify Loyalty Apps to Set Up
Which apps you can launch yourself in an afternoon, and which end in a developer ticket or a sales call.
Six of the eight major Shopify loyalty apps install without code on a standard Liquid theme, so raw install difficulty is not what separates them. What separates them is what happens after the install: whether the feature you came for is on your plan, whether the bill is predictable, and whether a human has to be involved. LoyaltyLion and Yotpo are the two where setup realistically involves a conversation rather than a configuration screen.
Full disclosure: we build Anchor Loyalty, listed first in the table below. Every column is a fact you can check on the vendor's own App Store listing or pricing page, which is why we published the columns rather than a ranking. Judge the data, not us.
Setup reality, app by app
“Easy to set up” usually gets measured as install difficulty, which is the least interesting part. These four columns are what actually decide whether you launch this week or next quarter.
| App | Free plan | Install | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anchor Loyalty | Yes, 200 orders/mo | Theme app extension, no code | Headless SDK on Pro ($39.99) |
| Smile.io | Yes | Theme app extension, no code | VIP tiers require the $199/mo plan |
| Rivo | Yes, 200 orders/mo | Theme app extension, no code | Usage-based billing climbs with order volume |
| BON Loyalty | Yes, 250 orders/mo | Theme app extension, no code | VIP tiers on the $99/mo plan |
| Appstle Loyalty | Yes, plus free trial | Theme app extension, no code | Best value if you already run Appstle Subscriptions |
| Growave | Yes | No code, but four modules to configure | Setup time scales with how many bundled modules you enable |
| Yotpo LoyaltyNot fully self-serve | Yes, under 100 orders/mo | No code, inside the wider Yotpo suite | Per-order billing; quote-only above 5,000 orders/mo |
| LoyaltyLionNot fully self-serve | Yes, recommended under 400 orders/mo | Commonly needs developer involvement | Paid tiers are quote-based, so setup starts with a sales call |
Verified against Shopify App Store listings and vendor pricing pages in August 2026. We publish no “minutes to launch” figure because we have not stopwatch-tested eight installs, and an invented number would be exactly the kind of claim this page argues against.
The part that actually takes an afternoon
Installing the app is twenty minutes on any of these. Launching a program someone wants to join is the rest of the afternoon, and the order matters: decide the economics before you open the app, not while you are staring at a configuration screen.
- 1
Decide the economics before you install anything
Pick your point value (1 point per $1 spent, 100 points equals $5 off is a common starting ratio), your sign-up bonus, and the reward ladder. This is the part that actually takes thought. Doing it in a spreadsheet first means the app configuration becomes data entry.
- 2
Install and configure earning rules
On a standard Liquid theme this is a theme app extension: add the block in the theme editor, no code. Enter the rules you decided in step one, then set your reward tiers.
- 3
Style the widget and write the copy
Match your brand colours and rewrite the default reward names. "500 points: $5 off" converts worse than a reward named for what it buys. Budget as much time here as on the rules.
- 4
Place a test order end to end
Buy something as a real customer, confirm points post, redeem a reward, and check the discount applies at checkout. Roughly half of launch problems surface in this single step.
- 5
Announce it to the list you already have
A loyalty program with no announcement earns points silently for months. Email existing customers with their starting balance if your app can seed one; a balance waiting for them converts better than an invitation to start from zero.
If your storefront is headless, ignore all of this
Every install method above assumes a Liquid theme. On Hydrogen or Next.js there is no theme to install into, so the question stops being “how easy is the install” and becomes “is there an SDK at all”. Most loyalty apps ship their UI through theme injection and simply do not render on a headless storefront. The Hydrogen quickstart covers what that setup looks like, and the headless overview covers what breaks without it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest Shopify loyalty app to set up?
For a merchant setting it up alone, the easiest apps are the ones with a real free plan, a one-click theme app extension install, and no gate between you and the features you came for. Anchor, Smile.io, Rivo, and BON all install without code. The practical difference is what happens next: Smile.io gates VIP tiers behind its $199/mo plan and Rivo bills by order volume, so an easy install can still end in a pricing conversation you did not plan for.
Which Shopify loyalty apps require a developer?
LoyaltyLion implementations commonly involve developer time, and its paid tiers are quote-based rather than self-serve, so setup usually starts with a sales conversation. Yotpo Loyalty is straightforward to install but sits inside a larger suite. Headless storefronts need developer work with any provider that does not ship an SDK, which is most of them.
Can I launch a Shopify loyalty program without a developer?
Yes, on a standard Liquid theme. Modern loyalty apps install as theme app extensions, which means adding a block in the theme editor rather than editing code. Plan an afternoon: roughly an hour to configure earning rules and rewards, an hour to style the widget and write the reward copy, and a test order before you announce it. The work that takes longer is deciding the program economics, not installing the app.
